Nokia N82 - Hands on

I was pretty sceptical about the N82 when I heard it announced. I was expecting just another candy-bar phone, nothing special.

so lets take a look at the N82.

(Nokia N82 at a conference room in Nokia House HQ)

The Phone Itself

The N82 looks good straight out the box.

The first thing I noticed was how shiny the N82 actually was, shiny phones do appeal to me and I love the N82 for it, but then again, if you had wrapped a 3210 in tinfoil I’d probably be saying it looked beautiful aswell.

Now.. I have what I would say is normal sized hands and I have trouble texting on the N82’s keypad, maybe it’s the fact that I’m used to the relatively sane sized keypad on the N93 or maybe its just because the keypad on the N82 is so god damn tiny.

(Keypad on N82)

If have tiny buttons wasn’t enough, Where’s my pencil button?! Trust me, you’ll never know how much use that button has until it’s gone, just try and copy/paste without it and you’ll know what I’m talking about.

For instance there’s no stupid rubber flaps for the memory card to go under, instead it’s a plasticy flap that sits in flush with the surroundings.

also both speakers are on one side of the phone which means they are placed perfectly for watching videos in landscape.

Besides the tiny keypad, Another flaw I find is the USB port on the phone.

Nokia what were you thinking?!

Why not stick with the Mini-USB that the N95 had, I’m sure everyone has atleast 10 Mini-USB cables lying around. Instead the N82 has a Micro-USB port, which annoys me as Mini-USB is far more practical I think. Atleast the hideous Pop-Port hasn’t re-appeared.

The back of the phone is the only part that didn’t have anything that annoyed or upset me. You have your Xenon flash and camera lens hiding behind a sliding cover (which feels very nice to slide). And the pattern over the back of the phone is quite classy, reminds me of the design over my HP Laptop – wavy lines.

Features

The N82 has all the usual features of the N-Series:

Connectivity: you have Wifi and Bluetooth, or of course that stupid Micro-USB.

GPS – it really hasn’t improved much. It takes forever to find where you are, unless you have absolutely no surroundings and holding it up to the sky, but even then it can take about 10 minutes. But that’s still an improvement on the N95’s GPS which just doesn’t work for me.

If your going to add a feature like this, then why not do it properly I ask.

The Camera – ok, this redeems the N82. the camera is just amazing

It takes beautiful photos even in the darkest of places thanks to its Xenon flash.

IMO it is far superior to any other camera phone in the market.

The red-eye reduction mode doesn’t really work, every time I’ve tried it I still end up with photos where everyone has daemon eyes.

The auto focus works perfectly, in the dark the phone projects a red light to assist with the auto focus, which is a nice feature.

Even the QVGA camera on the front gives a far superior image for video calls than other phones I’ve tried (being the N93 and N95 – 8GB)

*thumbs up*

The 2.4” display is very sharp, looks very impressive. Ive had people tell me it’s the best display they have ever seen on a phone. Makes looking at pictures and videos more enjoyable.

Overall - the N82 is a deffinite improvement on other phones, the N-Series has came along way since it started.

If your looking for a good looking camera phone with a few extra features then the N82 is for you.
